The German Society of Maryland is happy to announce that Christopher Lidie, a sophomore at Aberdeen High School, has been selected as the winner of the Society’s Summer Travel Scholarship.
Christopher will spend 3 weeks in Germany this summer, living with a host family, attending a German high school, and joining other American students on excursions to historical and cultural sites.
The Education Committee, co-chaired by Brigitte Fessenden and Shirley Santora, received ten applications this year. Mrs. Fessenden and Mrs. Santora were very pleased that the committee received so many excellent applications from across Maryland. They observed that committee members had a very difficult time selecting the winner.
Christopher is one of the top students in his high school class and is currently in second year German. His teacher is Ms. Heather Cachola. Christopher’s interest in German language and culture is heightened by his family history. The first Lidie arrived in North America in 1727, having come from Heilbronn (now in the state of Baden-Württemberg). Christopher will be the first Lidie to return to Germany in 300 years, and he is looking forward to being placed with a family in Baden-Württemberg.
Besides German, Christopher’s interests include debating, hiking, and playing video games.
